About SSA
Single Sailors Association of the San Francisco Bay is chartered especially for people who have an interest in sailing and who happen to be single. Everyone from novices to experienced sailors are welcome. Whether you want to learn to sail or crew on various sailboats, there is something for everyone regardless of your personal sailing experience and knowledge.
SSA is one of the oldest sailing organizations for singles on the Bay. Formed in 1982, SSA is unique in that, unlike most clubs, we are not in the charter business. We do not try to make money off our membership. SSA owns no boats. We crew on boats owned by our members.
Everyone who goes out becomes a working crew member. We wish to attract those who have a genuine interest in sailing and improving their sailing skills. Beginners are always welcome.
Our skippers and club members coordinate sailing days, raft ups, destinations, and overnight trips to locations such as Tiburon, San Francisco, Benicia, and other areas on the Bay. Opportunities for two, three, and four day cruises to the Delta, Drakes Bay, Half Moon Bay, Monterey, and beyond come up from time to time. Some of our members are interested in racing and, if you've never tried it, I can tell you - it's a lot of fun and very exciting! Racing can be a lot of fun whether you sail in them or stay on the dock having dinner while watching the races. As a member of SSA, you have access to these events.
While the development of a safe and experienced crew of sailors is an important goal, we have fun doing other things, too. Non-sailing trips and other activities are planned by our members. These include ski trips, river rafting, camping, pool parties, trips to the city, dinner parties, and other events.
"Is SSA for me and do I qualify?" — If you want to sail at a very low cost and have fun times with other like-minded single sailors in an active organization, then SSA is for you.
We look forward to seeing you at our Monthly Mixer which is held the second Thursday of the month (except December) at a local host yacht club (almost always on Alameda Island). Registration is required and the fee for the monthly mixer is $20 and paid in advance (primarily for the catering costs). Social hour at the bar starts at 5 PM with a substantial hors d’oeuvre buffet at 6 PM. There is a brief pause at 7 PM to discuss club business, recent events, and announce upcoming events. Socializing resumes at 7:30 PM and the bar closes at 9 PM. Hope to see you at our next meeting! Guests are always welcome.
